Latest news: On the Anniversary of WCOGA 2011, we would like to thank all our speakers, attendees and supporters who, by contributing to this first-time congress, made it happen. The congress extended knowledge and increased awareness of health issues relating to physical and psychosocial interactions leading to ill-health in women, men and children, along with the need to improve health by prevention of disease. It also stressed the importance of giving attention to individualised healthcare, teamwork and integrated medical care in select complex cases in areas such as adolescent health, fertility and cancer. The comprehensive health topics from conception to menopause also touched on the health of health professionals – an often overlooked but essential aspect of effective healthcare provision.
We hope to be adding more content regarding the discussions held during the congress in the latter part of 2012, so please check back later this year for updates.

Educational Objectives
The Congress aims to improve the understanding of the impact of mind-body interactions in initiating, exacerbating and maintaining disease symptoms. This will enable delegates to learn when best to apply a psychosomatic approach in order to save lives and reduce morbidity.
The scientific discussions and teaching methods, including role-play and multimedia, will help educate delegates, both at trainee and consultant level, to:
■ Recognise – That psychosomatic methods can be used in day-to-day care and applying these skills in assessment usually does not take longer than commonly practised care
■ Differentiate – Whether to give priority to the psychosomatic approach from the outset or to apply other surgical/medical interventions initially to optimise outcomes
■ Communicate – Using methods individualised for the patient and tailored to the clinician which would minimise the frequency and impact of unsatisfactory consultations and legal challenges
■ Learn – That there is a pressing need to apply these methods because of changing consumer expectations and perceptions
■ Engage – In increasing psychosomatic training both at core and sub-specialty levels would improve the management of most disease conditions with added long-term economic benefits
